For what do we have free today?
Yes, today I have a free day, and you can believe me, I am really happy about this, because there are hardly any things what i would need more than a free day. But why do I have free? Ususually there are any happenings of church (A good reason to be catholic- many free days) or there are historical reasons. In this case there are historical reasons.
In Austria it is a very funny thing. We are usually not a folk who admires history, because of that i was surprised when i read this survey in the morning:
What are Austrians proud of?
86%………………… Landscape
59%……………………….. Music
56%……………………… Cuisine
54%……………………… History
52%…………………………… Art
54% are proud of our history???? I wouldn’t know what to be proud of there. Austria was first named documentary as ‘Ostarichi’ (Empire in the east) in the year 996. Leopold von Babenberg was our emperor at this time (but Austria was very little in this time- the are where i live was not included).
From 1282 to 1918 we were emperored by the Habsburger. In this time we got bigger, tinier, bigger tinier, bigger… and finally we stayed tiny.
From 1915 to 1918 was the first world war. it started because our emperor Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were shot in Sarajevo (they were shot by a serbian called Gavrilo Princip). So Franz Joseph decided to attack the serbians. Unfortunately Austria had helpers, and the others too, so there was a completely world war. There is a proverb about this:
2 shots, 50 million deads.
(2 shots for Franz Ferdinand and Sophie, 50 million deads because of the world war which followed)
Well, and in 1938 we joined (or: we had to join) Hitler- Germany, which started the world war in 1939, and which was till 1945.
So, the result:
900 years leaded by emperors and after that 2 world wars which we started. The first because our emperor couple was shot by a serbian nationalist (this was of course also not okay, but why did Franz Joseph start a war then???) And a completely mad austrian who called himself a german and killed more than 6 million people (mostly jews, but also Roma, Sinti,…) with his helpers and started a world war which a mass of people.
Proud?
But i think what we can proud of is the time after this. How the people built up the country and how they were able to give us the wealth which we have now. Austria is a good country, of course we have some mistakes here and there, but in general we can be proud of it. Our history is not the best, but what counts is what is now. I’m also not completely happy with this situation (for example that people like Jörg Haider
and Heinz- Christian Strache
have such a success, or this silly thing with the german- slovenian panels in Kärnten
- or that we have such a mass of people who are unemployed
). We are already good, but we still can get better, and i hope that the people in this country will work for that.
And of course we can be proud of our cuisine
mhhh, Apfelstrudel… Topfentascherl…, Kaiserschmarren… Salzburger Nockerl.. YUMMY!
Apfelstrudel with Vanillia sauce and berries…
Salzburger Nockerl…
Kaiserschmarren…
Isn’t it a big miracle that i’m not completely fat already?
our landscape… ohhh, it is really wonderful- there is a reason why our national anthem starts with
Land der Berge…
land of mountains…
I love our mountains, they are sooooooooooo great for skiing
The Großglockner- 3797 metres- I already was on it, but not completely on the top
Land am Strome…
land on the river…
Oh, our blue danube (which is almost brown :P) But this means our rivers in generell, and we really have so nice rivers and lakes
The Danube, the second longest river of Europe
Land der Äcker…
land of fields…
This is a special line for our farmers i think
I live in an area where a lot of fields are. Very nice, it fits to the landscape
A field of Raps (engl: seed flax)- i love these plants, even if they smell strange
Land der Dome…
land of cathedrales…
Well.. churches… lots of them
In ever village one, and even if the village has just 3 houses, you will find a church everywhere. And i never counted the churches in cities, but i can tell you that there are even more
The cathedrale in Salzburg (Salzbuger Dom), for me the most beautiful in Austria
Land der Hämmer…
land of hammers…
A line for our smiths, which we had a lot in former times, and which we still have (but not so many)- but also for the carpenters (what my dad was) and generally people who have to work with hammers
Zukunftsreich-
land of future-
Oh yeah, i hope so

Heimat bist du großer Söhne…
home are you of great sons…
And daughters?
Okay, okay, i will not take this so word by word… how many great sons du you know? Mozart? Klimt? more?
[I guess you know Arnold Schwarzenegger, but i will never call him a great son of ours..)- oh, but our skiers of course… Benjamin Raich, Hermann Maier, Stefan Eberharter, Karl Schranz, Toni Sailer, Renate Götschel, Michaela Dorfmeister, Marlies Schild, Anita Wachter, Annemarie Moser- Pröll,— and many, many more… ski jumpers? Anton Innauer, Andreas Goldberger, Martin Höllwarth, Thomas Morgenstern, Armin Kogler, Andreas Widhölzl, Andreas Kofler… then Markus Rogan, our fantastic swimmer, Mirna Jukic not to forget, Fabienne Nadahraia, Dominik Koll - some great footballers (yes, we really have some :P): Toni Polster, Herbert Prohaska, Ernst Happel, Hans Krankl, Josef Hickesberger (our national coach), Andreas Ivanschitz, Sanel Kuljic, Emanuel Pogatetz, Roman Wallner, Roland Linz… formula 1 drivers: Niki Lauda, Gerhard Berger, Jochen Rindt, Roland Ratzenberger, Karl Wendlinger, Christian Klien, Alexander Wurz…
okay, we have great people here

Volk begnaded für das Schöne…
people lucky for the beauty…
we can be really lucky what a beautiful country we have.
viel gerühmtes Österreich…
much praised Austria…
viel gerühmtes Österreich.
much praised Austria.
we really praise our country- Austrians are the 4th most patriotic people in the world
Music- yeah, our music is great- and I’m NOT talking of Mozart
I just like his Zauberflöte, this is quite cool, we already saw this as kids- musical.
Austrian art- I like some of our artists, for example Klimt. My favourite drawer is Picasso, but he is spanish… pity…
my personal favourite of Klimt:
The tree of life
but back to why i have free today:
On May 15th in 1955 was Austrias state treaty signed. This was signed by the ‘winner states’ (USA, France, Union of Sowjets (now: Russia), Great Britain) who divided Austria in this time, and the new Republic of Austria. At the 27th of October they decided that in 90 days all the soldiers from the winner states must have left Austria. The 25th of October was the last day in this 90- days- time. ‘The day of the flag’ was celebrated the first time on 25th of October in 1956. The teachers were told that this day must be an unforgetable day for all students, and so there must be an austrian flag on front of each school every year at this day.
The most important treaty for us (we call it Staatsvertrag)- on the right under part you see the sign of Leopold Figl, one of the most important austrians in the last century. This treaty was singed by important men of the winner states, USA, France, UdSSR (CCCP, how the russians write), Great Britain.
We celebrate our national day at the 26th of October, because at this day was decided that, we shall be NEUTRAL for always. This means, that we mustn’t help any country who has war, and we also mustn’t start a war. Of course we are allowed to defend if somebody attacks us. We are also allowed to send soldiers into countries AFTER there was war and help with the building up. (These soldiers are called peace troop)
Since 1967 we have a free day on our national day.
Ah yes:
The oceanic state NAURU also celebrates their national day today.
Nauru- what?
Some information to Narau and this day:
Nauru belongs to Oceania. It is the smalles island state in the world. The emperor of Nauru said, that the population never must get under 1500, when the people there don’t want to die out. But then this ha
ppend. The emperor said, when the 1500th Baby will be born, they will fill it up with presents, and this day will be a national celebrating day. Whent his baby, Eidegenegen Eidagar
uwo, was born, they called this Baby Angam- Baby (angam (or añam)= Joy, happiness). It was born on the 26th of October 1932- the Angam day. At the beginning of 2006 they already had 13.287 inhabitants. Narau has a size of 21,3 km² (Austria= 84.000 km²)
So, dear inhabitants from Austria and Nauru- have a happy national day
